Tips and tricks

1. When sealing very moist food like marinated steak and some seafood it is important to remember that you must not suck liquid through the machine, this could damage the pump. If at any time you notice liquid entering the machine you can stop it by pressing the cancel button. If you do happen to get a small amount of liquid up into the sealing area of the bag while the sealing process is happening it is advisable to check the final seal, the liquid can cool the plastic and prevent a complete seal. To fix this simply put the end of the bag back over the sealing band, close the lid and press seal; this will double seal on the bag. Also if sealing meat or fish where there is a likelihood of moisture, use the extended seal setting.
To prevent any of the above occurring there are some things you can try. Place a folded paper towel at the top of the bag between the food and the sealing band. The paper towel will absorb some of the liquid. Wrap the food in some cling film and then vacuum seal. Try Semi-freezing the food first and then vacuum sealing. Or you can also just do a partial vacuum seal. To do this, proceed in the normal way but once the vacuum process has started if liquid is seen entering the sealing area press the cancel button to stop the machine and then press the seal button. This process will seal the bag with a partial vacuum which is adequate for most meat and fish which is being consumed within approx 6 months.

2. When vacuum sealing very soft food that would be flattened and damaged under a full vacuum. Use the partial vacuum trick described above. Suck as much air as possible out of the bag and start the seal process as soon as the food starts to be deformed.

3. Don’t throw the bag away after each use, consider cleaning the bag and re using it. If you cut the bag directly under the sealing line all you will loose is about 20mm of film.

4. The sealer can also be used to re seal other types of food storage bags. Do not try and vacuum seal. Simply place the open end of the bag over the sealing band, close the lid and press seal. Use the normal heat setting for this. Results can vary but generally this trick works very well.

5. For vacuum sealing liquids we have available a range of polycarbonate containers with are compatible with your vacuum sealer. These canisters can also be used for leafy green vegetables and Marinating meats. Meat can be marinated in a fraction of the normal time because the vacuum in the canister opens the pores of the meat and allows the marinade to penetrate.

6. For defrosting or heating in the Microwave make a small hole in the bag for the air to escape.

7. You can use other brands of vacuum film in The Zeropak Machine. We recommend our film which is very good quality and tends to be thicker than most other brands. If you are using a thinner film adjust the sealing time down from extended to normal.

8. Liquid can be sealed in bags. You can seal but don’t vacuum. Try making pouches of water and then freezing them, they make great ice blocks for your chilly bin.

9. Vacuum pack your prime steaks and place in the fridge for 1 to 2 weeks. You now have lovely aged steak.
